Who we are

Since 1949, Enbridge has grown to become a leading energy transportation and distribution company in North America. We operate the world's longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system, the Lakehead System, and a variety of affiliated pipelines in Canada and in the United States.

Enbridge is also involved in liquids marketing and international energy projects and has a growing involvement in the natural gas transmission and midstream businesses that transport, gather, process and market natural gas and other petroleum products.

As a distributor of energy, Enbridge owns and operates Canada's largest natural gas distribution company, Enbridge Gas Distribution, which provides gas to industrial, commercial and residential customers in Ontario, Quebec and New York State.

The company employs more than 5,700 people, primarily in Canada, the U.S. and South America.

Enbridge activities are carried out through six major business segments:

Major Projects is responsible for the planning and execution of new pipeline projects across North America

Liquids Pipelines includes the operation of the mainline system and existing feeder pipelines that transport crude oil and natural gas liquids in Canada and the United States.

Gas Transportation includes natural gas transmission, gathering, treating and processing facilities – both offshore and onshore – in the United States.

Joint Ventures in Canada and the United States, which transport gasoline, diesel and jet fuel across North America.

Gas Distribution and Services consists of full to part ownership of a variety of gas utility operations that serve residential, commercial, industrial and transportation customers throughout Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and New York State.

Sustainable Development

Enbridge was recognized as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland

Enbridge believes that to achieve a strong environmental performance, we must set clear goals, find new better ways to operate stay on top of developing trends, and constantly challenge ourselves to improve.

  • Reduce our Canadian direct greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) to 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2010.
  • Expand GHG reporting to include all our international operations and sponsored investments in the United States where we have operational control over CSR policies and procedures.
  • Prevent all spills and leaks from our energy transportation and distribution systems.
  • Conduct regular emergency response drills and simulations to test and improve procedures.
  • Strive for continuous improvement in our understanding and management best practices.
  • Develop an internal GHG data management system to allow us better to track and manage our GHG supporting data capture program.
Sustainable Energy Projects

Wind Power

Enbridge is currently involved in three wind power projects in Canada with an additional project being built in Ontario.

Fuel Cells

Enbridge is leading an effort to transform its natural gas pipeline operations by integrating fuel cells within our pipeline infrastructure. We are working with FuelCell Energy, Inc. on a hybrid fuel cell plant that will recover waste energy and convert it to electricity with zero emissions. The first phase of this hybrid plant is now operational at Enbridge Gas Distribution’s Toronto headquarters.
