Role synopsis
The News & Features (words & images) team provides high quality, credible written content and imagery for [Company] internal and external news communication channels, including [Company]. The content should accurately reflect [Company] global operations and strategic themes in a manner that both internal and external audiences will find accessible, interesting and compelling.
The reporter, Technology, will be part of a small team responsible for the writing and commissioning of news stories and features for publishing in the above-mentioned channels, and will specifically be responsible for producing content that protects and enhances the scientific, technological and engineering reputation of the company.
Key accountabilities
Content creation
To generate story ideas, write, commission, edit and sometimes rework news and features material to help raise the internal and external profile of the technology achievements contained in [Company] business successes. In so doing, make it easier for technology staff and [Company] leadership to talk with clarity and pride about the role of technology in [Company]. The successful fulfilment of this accountability will be positive feedback from technology readers and [Company] leadership.
In addition, to create or commission written content about other (non Technology-related) areas of [Company] business or functions as requested by the Managing Editor, News and Features. The successful fulfilment of this accountability will be measured by the regular inclusion of non Technology-related material being generated by the job holder for each of the main Group Communication channels.
Technology Networks
To participate in the Technology editorial panel that will meet quarterly to elicit the best technology content from the organisation, build a network of senior technologists within the organisation to ensure credibility of content, and establish a client-relationship with the head of Research & Technology Communications to ensure alignment with the broader Technology communications plan. The successful fulfilment of this accountability will be the creation and publication of credible, relevant and accessible technology content across [Company] communications channels.
Integration
Under the supervision of the Managing Editor, News and Features (words & images), to establish effective working relationships with all members of the News and Features team and build solid relationships with other communications professionals and individual businesses to keep abreast of what’s happening across the group and ensure News and Features written content is seamlessly integrated across all areas of activity. The successful fulfilment of this accountability will be an integrated communications plan being implemented consistently throughout the year.
Clearance
Under the supervision of the Managing Editor, News and Features (words & images), to adhere to appropriate clearance processes to ensure all relevant Technology or other sources and communications colleagues are linked into written content, without impairing the integrity and credibility of the material. Successful fulfilment of this accountability is measured by consistently producing accurate, credible and well-written Technology and other content that satisfies the potential political and business sensitivities of the company.
Essential criteria & qualifications
• Educated to A level or graduate standard, preferably with a degree in the sciences
Experience
• Working as a journalist for a reputable technology publication
Other
• Experience of online publishing
• Strong sub-editing and proof-reading skills
• Ability to generate story ideas
• Experience of working to tight deadlines
• Able to communicate and interact effectively with people at all levels, including technology specialists, senior executives, subordinates, peers and third party suppliers
