Job Purpose:
Lead functional design input to small projects, or carry out design tasks as part of a large project team.
 
Accountabilities:
• Carry out design activities and calculations, including the production of 2D and 3D CAD drawings, schedules, other documents, man-hour estimates for CAD work, interpreting clients’ technical specifications and other related activities, to meet project requirements.
• Carry out other project related tasks as assigned by more senior designers or project manager, as required
• Plan and prioritise own work to ensure that functional project requirements on scope, time and cost are met.
• Check work of more junior designers, to deliver a quality functional input to projects.
• Ensure that work complies with all necessary corporate, departmental and legislative requirements and procedures, to guarantee that the necessary consistency and quality of delivery is maintained.
• Recognise and address potential and actual cross-discipline issues and conflicts so that overall engineering input to a project is coherent
• Develop own experience and skills, moving towards the capability to move to a more senior role
 
 
Skills, Knowledge and Special Attributes Needed for this Position:
 
Essential:
• First level further education technical qualification (eg ONC)
• Relevant experience, typically at least 4 years relevant design experience is required to fully perform the role; however less experienced individuals may be trained up within the role, under close supervision
• Ability to work in a team environment
 
Other Matters:
• Mobility and flexibility to work anywhere in home country essential
 
Range and Scope of Activities:
• Works under general management, within defined procedures; less experienced individuals are supervised more closely until their capability grows to fit the role
• Works with peers from other disciplines
 
Nature of Problems and Solving them:
• Applies own skills and experience to resolve common and novel technical problems. Seeks advice from more experienced or specialist resources as required.
 
Level of Discretion:
• Plans and prioritises own work and that of more junior designers (once fulfilling the full role)
• Refers any issues that threaten project delivery to manager
• Checks work of more junior designers (once fulfilling the full role; initially the job holder’s own work with be closely checked and supervised)
• Works within procedures at all times.
 
Impact:
Satisfactory discharging of the responsibilities in this role is essential to the successful completion of a project. Errors or omissions may not become apparent for some time, threatening project delivery.
 
Communication and contacts:
Has to communicate effectively with peers across disciplines, and more senior colleagues, on tasks and other day to day issues, in verbal and written format. Provides lead in drawings and other project documentation.
 
Requirements:
• Previous Nuclear experience would be desirable but not essential
• Previous project 3D modelling experience would be desirable (PDMS/Autoplant)
• Previous project experience of using Instrument Database applications for the automated generation of design deliverables
• Good high level of IT competency of using Microsoft Office applications
• Good high level of IT competency of using Autodesk AutoCAD
