Job Purpose:
To lead functional design input to assigned projects.
 
Accountabilities:
• Carry out design activities and calculations, including the production of 2D and 3D CAD drawings, schedules, other documents, manhour estimates for CAD work, interpreting clients’ technical specifications and other related activities, to meet project requirements.
• Lead the design activities of self and other discipline designers on a project, to ensure delivery meets scope, time, cost and quality.
• Check the work of more junior staff to delivery a quality functional input to projects
• Ensure that own work and that of more junior designers on a project complies with all necessary corporate, departmental and legislative requirements and procedures, to guarantee that the necessary consistency and quality of delivery is maintained.
• Provide functional support and guidance to more junior staff to develop both them as individuals and the capability of the team as a whole
• Work with other engineering functions on a project to ensure inter-disciplinary alignment and coherence.
• Carry out design activities at client site as required, to meet individual project or client needs.
• Support the engineering manager in non project based activities such as writing procedures, resource planning, establishing policy, budgeting, recruitment etc, to support the drive to continuously improve and optimise the operation of the department
 
Skills, Knowledge and Special Attributes Needed for this Position:
 
Essential:
• Second level further education technical qualification (eg HNC)
• Substantial relevant experience, typically at least ten years relevant design experience
• Broad based technical skills within own function
• Team leadership capability
• Capable of managing own work and that of others
• Site experience
 
Preferred:
• Experience in contracting environment
 
Other Matters:
• Mobility and flexibility to work anywhere in home country essential
• Potential for worldwide assignments
 
Range and Scope of Activities:
• Functional designer lead on a major project
• Leads project team of up to 15 designers/senior designers
• Works within [Company] or client procedures
 
Nature of Problems and Solving them:
• Address and resolve any functional issues within a project through use of technical capability and engineering judgement, applying own or colleagues skills as appropriate
• Addresses and resolves any potential failure on time / cost / quality in the engineering execution of a project
 
Level of Discretion:
• Makes all relevant routine delivery decisions for the project on own authority.
• Requests resources from manager as required to meet deliverables
• Refers to engineering discipline manager for discussion and approval of overrun or overspend.
 
Impact:
Satisfactory discharging of the responsibilities in this role is essential to the successful completion of a project. Errors or omissions may not become apparent for some time, threatening project delivery.
 
Communication and contacts:
Has to communicate effectively with peers across disciplines, and more senior colleagues, on tasks and other day to day issues, in verbal and written format. Provides lead in drawings and other project documentation If site based, may have regular client contact
 
Project Specific Requirements:
• Experience in contracting environment
• Previous Nuclear experience would be desirable but not essential
• Previous project 3D modelling experience would be desirable (PDMS/Autoplant)
• Previous project experience of using Instrument Database applications for the automated generation of design deliverables
• Good high level of IT competency of using Microsoft Office applications
• Good high level of IT competency of using Autodesk AutoCAD
• Previous experience of work/deliverable activity planning and man-hour/progress reporting for Design team activities
