Job Description:
The Off-line Optimization Engineer, as part of the Feedstock, Yields & Optimization group, will work as a member of a diverse team charged with implementing and sustaining the Steam Cracking Optimization Strategy (SCOS). The SCOS toolset enables the optimal selection of chemical feedstocks as well as key operating condition optimization at major [Company] steam cracking sites across the world. The Off-line Optimization Engineer will be located in Baytown, Texas and will be responsible for developing and maintaining unit models, developing and maintaining related tools such as reporting, results analysis and model validation tools, and assisting sites in their implementation of the toolset. This function will also be responsible for troubleshooting site models and closing model validation gaps at the sites. The Off-line Optimization Engineer works under the day to day direction of the Feedstock, Yields, & Optimization group leader and will also receive work direction and technical guidance from senior off-line optimization engineering positions.
Primary Job Functions:
Build, maintain, and improve fundamental process models and/or linear program models of steam cracking and related units utilizing state of the art optimization technology
Serve as primary interface for the group with the Information Technology (IT) department in order to support and maintain adequate computing platform capabilities
Maintain and improve on ancillary tools utilized to implement SCOS such as model user interface tools, reporting tools, result analysis tools, and model validation tools
Lead roll-out of SCOS elements to world-wide steam cracking sites; interface with each site's optimization modeler and their technical support personnel
Assist individual site modelers in maintaining and improving their tools when problems arise or more advanced changes are required
Actively participate in and assist in leading modelers' community of practice; applicant will become a recognized expert in specific elements of Steam Cracking Yields and Optimization
Job Requirements:
- B.S. or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering
- Strong in chemical engineering fundamentals and strong analytical skills; effective problem solver able to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems
- Excellent computer skills with a background in chemical process modeling, including process simulations, process equipment rating, and heat and material balance development. Ideal candidate would have in depth knowledge of Invensys or Aspen optimization tools.
- Experience in the refining or chemical process industry, preferably with experience in some or all of: manufacturing technical support, control systems, or process design
- Flexibility to support world-wide sites during off-hours via telephone and computer network
- Must be a team player who works well with a diverse group to achieve a common goal
- Willing to travel domestically and internationally as required to roll-out SCOS elements
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Familiarity with fundamentals of the steam cracking pyrolysis and recovery processes
- Strong coding skills in Visual Basic, Visual Basic for Applications, and Fortran
- Experience with linear programming based optimization of chemical processes
- Background in refining and olefins economics and business models
