The IST Compliance Team Lead is a key member of the GC&E IST Compliance team supporting the North American Gas and Power (“NAGP”) Business Unit. The position has responsibility for the implementation, maintenance and oversight of the compliance program related to analyzing and monitoring the business activities (including trading) in Gas, Power, Coal and Renewables within the NAGP Business Unit. In addition supervisor support will be extended to the monitoring of remote office locations.
Key accountabilities
- Supervise the North Gas IST Compliance Team in Calgary.
- Adhere to laws, regulations and company ethical standards in key risk areas arising out of Gas and Power Marketing & Trading. These requirements include exchange rules (e.g., New York Mercantile Exchange-NYMEX, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), NGX, Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rules and regulations as well as assisting Legal and Regulatory Affairs with monitoring relevant anti-trust and competition laws.
- Represent IST Compliance as part of the North Gas Leadership Team
- Form strong relationships with BU personnel while displaying superior management skills.
- Administer the advice and guidance component of the compliance program in order to provide consistent, compliant advice and guidance to the various stakeholders in the BU.
- Contribute to the design and development of a robust compliance framework fit for purpose for the NAGP BU.
- Administer ongoing proactive assessments of deal activity and trading strategies to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations mandated by the external regulatory authorities, exchanges and [Company]'s internal policies.
- Create, develop and maintain a compliance activity capture tool to monitor the activities of IST Compliance.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of procedures and processes for gathering information in response to external inquires from auditors, exchanges, regulatory agencies, or others as needed.
- Develop and maintain procedures and processes for compliance advice and guidance exception handling/escalation to ensure breaches of advice and guidance are handled consistently and in accordance with [Company] policy and external laws and regulations.
- Ensure appropriate and timely escalation of regulatory and compliance issues to the IST Compliance Manager.
- Monitor significant regulatory and enforcement developments and trends affecting the NAGP BU.
- Develop appropriate action plans to adjust the compliance monitoring program in response to new high-priority risks to the business.
- Review new regulatory requirements and proposals and analyze the potential impact upon the Business Unit and broader [Company] impact.
- Promote a collaborative relationship with legal staff to facilitate strategic alignment and appropriate involvement of legal in compliance matters, including the interpretation of applicable laws and regulations proactively analyzing the effect of new or revised laws and regulations on the compliance program, and the management of government agency investigations and inquiries.
Essential criteria & qualifications
- A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a related degree from an accredited university.
- A minimum of 8 years experience in a trading environment.
- A minimum of 5 years -Supervisory and/or managerial experience.
- Proficient in the regulatory arena including, NYMEX, ICE, FERC and/or CFTC areas, with particular emphasis on compliance, control and/or legal matters.
- Excellent analytical and report drafting skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to apply these skills at all levels of the organization and with key external stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills - capable of adopting a variety of styles to achieve the desired result.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work creatively to achieve identified goals, both individually and as a team player working in a global function.
- Strong problem-solving skills with ability to see the next step and follow through on operational detail.
- Ability to appropriately influence to effect change in the organization.
- The willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time in order to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Desirable criteria & qualifications
- Experience in the gas and NGL products supply and trading business.
- Futures or derivatives industry experience.
- Diverse and global experience, including within the Americas Region.
- A Master's Degree or Juris Doctorate.
