An exciting opportunity exists within the Community, Aboriginal and Government Relations group located at our Kelowna Operations Centre. Reporting to the Director, Community, Aboriginal and Government Relations, this position will appeal to a community relations, communications and stakeholder relationship professional with experience in developing strategic communication plans and delivering community relations business objectives.
The incumbent will be required to establish contact and manage strategic stakeholder engagement in the Okanagan, Kootenay and Northern Region specific to corporate issues and project and business development support. In addition, the successful candidate will maintain an awareness of all activities that affect business development potential and will advise senior management on strategic issues related to our customer growth and facility development objectives. The incumbent will develop strategic communication plans and deliver our community relations business objectives including management of the company’s existing municipal, first nations operating and franchise agreements. Unique opportunities will allow the employee to work with Distribution and Transmission on large capital projects in the coming months.
This is a Temporary position of 1 year with the possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
- Develop/maintain strategic relationships with municipal, aboriginal and provincial elected officials and staff
- Develop/maintain relationships with community organizations and local/regional opinion leaders that may impact the Company or its customers
- Maintain an awareness of issues in communities that could affect Company operations and growth opportunities and communicate internally
- Prepare annual plans for community relations activities in the Okanagan, Kootenay’s and North towards Company initiatives of project development and/or customer growth
- Develop and implement complex long-term public consultation processes working with other [Company] Departments and consultants
- Deliver corporate communications aimed at contacts within the community regarding company initiatives, rate changes, commodity price changes etc.; lead regional consultation processes delivering public support for project/program regulatory approval
- Deliver franchise obligations on an ongoing basis
- In support of Project Development, develop suitable community relations programs related to large capital projects that the Company may undertake in the Okanagan, Kootenay’s and North including open houses, focus groups, questionnaires, media campaigns, etc.
- Work with Distribution Operations and Transmission and other staff to ensure coordinated communication with various levels of government and community based NGO’s
- Provide assistance to media relations efforts and act as a Corporate spokesperson as required
- Provide input to Company forecasts prepared by Forecasting/Business Analysis department regarding community level issues.
- Use relationship management tools such as Café software to track contacts.
- Contribute to the strategic development and deployment of our Community Investment Program
Qualifications
- University degree in Communications or other related discipline
- 5 years of demonstrated success in the field of community/public relations
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the natural gas/utility industry
- Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
- Demonstrated project management skills with ability to manage several projects and budgets simultaneously.
- Ability to meet firm deadlines with minimal supervision; proven capacity to be a self-starter
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and team building capacity
- Superior municipal relations experience, contacts and issues management
- Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships representatives from levels of government
- Demonstrated First nations cultural and business awareness, and ability to interact with First Nations community leaders
- Ability to manage issue related conflicts and issue resolution capacity (negotiation skills)
- Existing contacts and relationships in the community is desirable.
- This position will require extensive evening and weekend work and travel away from Kelowna to attend meetings and deliver presentations etc. within the geographic area of coverage, [Company] head office and Surrey Operations Centre
