The Solution Architect Oil has design authority and design accountability for project and application maintenance activity in the OTP and FVC space, reporting into the Lead Architect OTP and FVC.
Primarily, this involves the definition and design of an IT solution to a business problem or oversight of it, while ensuring alignment the architecture strategy and design principles. The delivery effort is split into BAU support, ongoing enhancements, maintenance releases and small to medium sized projects.
He or she contributes to the application roadmap for that portfolio and will work with relevant delivery teams to support and guide that delivery.
He or she provides architecture & design expertise as well as a good understanding of the business processes & challenges and the associated application portfolio.
Further he or she define and maintains the corresponding architecture artifacts and knowledge assets associated with the application portfolio and roadmap.
In this capacity he or she will also work with peer Solution Architects accountable for other delivery areas and projects in the Oil and Gas SPU, as well as R&M acting as a ‘town planner’ to identify opportunities and leverage synergies where they exist.
The interface to Refining and Marketing (R&M) is of particular importance, since a large portion of the end user community are either part of R&M or work closely with R&M end users.
This is a challenging role facing off the delivery teams, as well as to the business community. The role requires an individual who wants to impress with their knowledge and skills, but at the same time is prepared to grow and learn as the architecture takes shape.
Key accountabilities
• Be the owner of portions of the Global Oil and Fuels Value Chain (FVC) Solution Architecture and its relationship with the wider production estate and the Global Programmes architecture.
• Support the lead Architect Oil Transaction POipe (OTP) and FVC as the design authority for the above portfolio.
• Work closely with the business representatives and Information Technology and Services (IT&S) delivery team to ensure business requirements are complete, understood and realised.
• Develop a broad understanding of the functionality of existing systems and deep understanding of the business critical applications and their major issues.
• Represent the FVC and OTP portfolio in the architecture community across disciplines – functional, technical and data.
• Work closely with the architectural community to understand the wider vision for Oil and the programmes of work under way to achieve the portfolio roadmap.
• Seek out and describe industry-leading practice for business processes and IT&S. architecture in trading systems
• Ensure all aspects of the planning and portfolio management processes have sufficient architectural input and are realistic in terms of delivering the TOM.
• Effective communication to all stakeholders, including business leadership, project managers, architecture colleagues and business users, to ensure that the solution architecture and roadmap are clearly understood at each level.
Essential criteria & qualifications
• Ability to build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders business users, BAs, delivery staff and offshore suppliers – Ability to inspire senior business and technical colleagues generating their buy-in for involvement in analysis activities and to proposed solutions.
• Strong communication skills and well developed inter-personal skills; willingness to share knowledge and best practice with a variety of people (developers, analysts, business users etc)
• A high degree of skill and experience in the analysis of business issues. Proficiency in techniques to formulate repeatable and re-usable designs and architectures including requirements discovery & analysis, formulation of solution context, solution alternatives identification and assessment, technology selection and configuration.
• Knowledge of transaction processing, physical supply and trading, physical settlement processing.
• Experience in an Oil trading environment or investment banking infrastructure combined with awareness of industry needs & business challenges
• Ability to present ideas well graphically (functional architecture drawings, process) as well as verbally
• Demonstrable ability to work in a diverse global team in an influencing role.
• Successful delivery of business change (process, system, organisational change) which involved gaining the buy-in of business users.

Desirable criteria & qualifications
• A good understanding of working with and creating enterprise architecture models or methods Experience of working with offshore partners
• Experience of developing Roadmaps for IT investments, aligned to a business Vision and Target Operating Model
• Knowledge of IST’s organisation’s application suite and its supporting infrastructure, architecture, strategy and roadmap
• Strong data design skills
• Exposure to data warehousing, BI, collaboration and reporting tools
• Broad systems background
• Technical knowledge – e.g. Java, thin clients, data bases, infrastructure, integration or information architecture.
Desirable Criteria:
• Exposure to linear programming methodologies and their application within IST and R&M.
• We have knowledge of trading in the essentials - we could add knowledge of the supply business as a desirable.
