REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator, Resources Branch
PURPOSE:
This position is primarily to work within an established project team, providing business solutions for geologists and reservoir engineers in the Geology and Reserves Group.
The software solutions we provide are challenging and often fun to work on as we strive to equip our geologists with better tools to enable them to understand the millions of years of history that lie beneath our feet, and the resources therein that drive so much of the economy in Alberta.
We employ iterative object oriented analysis and design processes in our software development work based upon the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Our software development platform is based upon Microsoft technologies with VB.Net being our programming language. There is a spatial aspect to much of our work and we use GIS tools (ArcGIS) to meet these needs.
Working with leading edge software development practices and the latest software technologies, the successful candidate will be working with project teams in building business software which enables geologists and engineers meet our organizational objectives.

It is planned for this internship to provide opportunities to work with and develop skills in the following areas:
- OO principles
- OO analysis and design practices
- OO software development practices
- Unified Modeling Language & Rational Unified Process
- IBM Application Lifecycle Management tools (ClearCase, ClearQuest, RSM, RequisitePro and others)
- Microsoft VB.Net
- Windows Communication Foundation
- 3-Tier architecture
- Developing stored procedures
- Geographical Information Systems, principles and development
- Spatial database technology
- Relational database technology

- You will have the opportunity to experience the full software development lifecycle. This will help you to determine the areas of work that you most enjoy and to steer both your internship and future career as a result.
- This internship will allow you to build upon the things that you have learned at university and to both see them in practice and actively participate in them. We care passionately about making the best use of OO concepts and best software development practices.
- No previous knowledge, experience or understanding of the oil and gas industry is required. We will work with you and provide you with the training that you need.
- By the end of the internship you will not only have gained solid IT experience across the whole lifecycle, but you will have received a good introduction to one of the major industries and sources of employment within the province of Alberta.
- No previous knowledge, experience or understanding of GIS is required. We will provide you with coaching and training as needed.
- We are highly team oriented. This internship provides the opportunity to become an integral part of a closely knit and friendly team.

- You will be working from our offices in downtown Calgary. These are conveniently located within a short walk of all amenities.

WORK TERM
We typically offer placements of 12 to 16 months and will consider terms as short as 9 months, starting after May 2009 and completing before September 2010.
QUALIFICATIONS
Currently studying for a Computer Science, Software Engineering or related degree, and must meet the requirements of the university to participate in an internship program.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Relocation costs covered by the ERCB will be considered on an individual basis.
