Job Description:
The Senior Counsel will provide legal support for commercial litigation and arbitration section of large corporate law department.
Responsibilities may include;
Managing heavy commercial litigation and arbitration docket to include developing case strategy, case plan, case budget, cost management, overseeing and advising outside counsel, and conducting risk analysis.
Providing legal advice to [Company] staff and management and provide direction to procure the optimal early resolution through ADR or, if necessary, trial of commercial matters and ensure litigation costs associated with commercial claims are appropriate for the magnitude and risk of the matter.
Basic / Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States on a regular full-time basis without restrictions.
- J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
- Admitted to the State Bar of Texas or other appropriate jurisdiction or allowed to practice law in Texas through reciprocal agreement.
- Minimum 10 years experience with extensive knowledge and experience of commercial litigation and arbitration in the energy industry.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong hands-on experience and leadership in the discovery process, both paper and electronic, (including the updated Federal Rules of Discovery).
- Experience with Downstream (Refining, Marketing and Transportation) litigation and/or oil and gas law would be very beneficial.
- Superior mediation negotiation, advocacy and presentation skills, and mature judgment and discretion.
- Ability to manage and prioritize assignments which may be broad in scope and complexity, and which involve collaborative work with employees in different departments or with varying degrees of seniority required.
- Self-initiation on regular and complex assignments required.
- Effective utilization and communication with internal support staff including assigned paralegal and administrative assistant.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills required; ability to effectively manage and communicate with internal business clients and outside the Company with opposing and outside counsel, experts, witnesses and vendors.
- Required to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently within broadly defined objectives, being able to perform job functions without extensive supervision.
- Reports to Managing Counsel and works as a member of his/her team. Close consultation with business management is essential.
- Close consultation with other members of the [Company] Legal Function is important.
- Ability to learn quickly and apply COP policies, procedures, operations and industry practices.
- Comprehensive analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning, evaluation and legal project management skills.
- Experience with decision tree risk analysis is a plus.
- Ability to prepare and present clear, concise and persuasive oral/written opinions, reports, correspondence and presentations.
- Effective use of knowledge and experience in establishing and weighing alternatives for making decisions associated with area of responsibility.
- Capable of establishing professional credibility with variety of clients and management.
